1951 Crosley Super Sport Roadster
Powell Crosley Junior was the owner of Crosley Broadcasting, Crosley Radios, Crosley Refrigerators, and the Cincinnati Reds; he also wanted to sell cars of his own design. With help from his younger brother Lewis, a trained engineer, the first Crosley automobile was created and priced at just $250. Nearly 5,000 examples were built before America entered World War II and production ceased. After the war, production resumed and in 1949, the Hot Shot & Super Sport roadster were introduced and classified as America’s first postwar sports car. Returning GIs wanted something small and fun like the cars they saw in Europe and these small vehicles carried a price tag of just $900, less than half the cost of Chevrolet’s base model. They backed up their hefty ‘sports car’ title by winning the Index of Performance and taking overall victory at the first Sebring 6-hour race in 1950. Other victories included the 1951 Swiss Grand Prix and second in the 1951 Tokyo Grand Prix. The engines built by Crosley were used to carry other racing specials, including those built by Bandini, Moretti and Siata. Crosley engines even made their way into marine applications and powered several boats during the 1950s!! Sadly, less than a few thousand were produced and even fewer remain today. Weighing only 1180 pounds and powered by a 44ci Inline 4 engine with a 3-speed manual transmission, the little Crosley was capable of 75mph in stock trim!
The car was completely and professionally restored in a nut and bolt rotisserie fashion. Every screw, every bolt, every component of the car was reconditioned to the highest level possible, and back to factory specifications! The car was painted in a Pale Mint Green with Black stayfast canvas convertible top with Red vinyl interior. The car is complete with Crosley AM radio, Convertible top, matching spare tire, hydraulic brakes, glove box and display card.
